Job Summary
The Staff Veterinarian (ER) will serve as the primary case manager for emergency room cases during assigned shifts. This role is integral to the hospital's mission of providing high-quality emergency care while supporting the educational development of veterinary students, interns, and residents. The ER Veterinarian will work collaboratively with house officers and will have access to guidance from boarded Emergency and Critical Care (ECC) faculty as needed. Duties & Responsibilities

Emergency Patient Care and Case Management

• Serve on a Patient Care Team as the primary clinician for emergency room cases during assigned shifts.
• Manage all phases of patient care including triage, diagnostics, treatment planning, and client communication.
• Ensure accurate, timely documentation of medical records in compliance with hospital policies and standards.
• Collaborate with ECC faculty and specialty services as needed to ensure optimal patient outcomes.

Clinical Education and House Officer Supervision

• Work alongside and support veterinary students, interns, and residents in all aspects of emergency medicine and case management.
• Participate in clinical rounds, case discussions, service-specific training activities, and continuing education programs as required.
• Contribute to the educational mission of the Veterinary Teaching Hospital by serving as a mentor and role model for developing clinicians.
• Attend service and department meetings as required.

Professional Development, Collaboration, and Administrative Duties

• Participate in service-specific continuing education and training requirements to maintain clinical competency.
• Contribute to a positive, team-oriented work environment and foster inter-service communication and collaboration.
• Complete administrative responsibilities including scheduling, record compliance reviews, and departmental reporting as assigned.
• Participate in quality improvement initiatives and contribute to evidence-based practice standards within the ER service.

Additional Physical Demands
An environment of stress may be anticipated. The person in this position must be capable of reliably functioning in such an environment. The amount of physical exertion will vary with assignments. For example, the incumbent may be required to lift animals of 40 lbs. or more on and off examination tables or treatment surfaces. The handling of any animal presents some element of risk of injury. Considerable strength and caution are required when working with animals during diagnostic, treatment, or surgical procedures.

This position requires operating equipment, administering medications, and restraining animals of various species for examination and treatment. Exposure to anesthetic agents may present a potential hazard. The incumbent must be able to work in the presence of animal waste and biological fluids. Syringes, needles, and medications are potentially dangerous and must be handled with appropriate care.

Persons with allergies to animal dander, dust, pollen, hay, or related allergens may experience discomfort in this position. Work involving animals with various disease states may expose the individual to viral, bacterial, and fungal agents known to be transmissible to humans. Exposure to chemicals and anesthetic waste gases may be potentially hazardous if mishandled or misused. Appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) must be worn as required by hospital safety protocols.

This position requires the ability to perform clinical veterinary duties safely and effectively in a fast-paced urgent care environment, including examining and treating patients, handling and positioning animals, and collaborating with clinical staff. Shift work, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, is required. On-call responsibilities may apply as determined by hospital operational needs.

Minimum Qualifications

• DVM or equivalent degree from an AVMA-accredited veterinary college.
• Licensed (or eligible for licensure) to practice veterinary medicine in the State of Illinois.
• Minimum of one (1) year of experience in emergency veterinary medicine, or successful completion of a rotating internship preferred.

Appointment Information

This is a 100% full-time Academic Professional position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible. The budgeted annual salary range for the position is $115,000 to $130,000. Final salary offered will be determined by a thorough assessment of available market data, internal salary equity, candidate experience and qualifications, collective bargaining agreements, and budget constraints. This position is not eligible for any type of sponsorship for work authorization.
