Electrical Lab Technician - HIL & Embedded Systems

Lab technician is a hands‑on member of our Client’s Electronic Systems Verification and Validation Engineer where they support lab‑based testing of embedded control software that goes onto various machines. Technicians work closely with engineering team and is responsible for building, modifying, and maintaining complex wiring harnesses and load plates that support advanced Hardware‑in‑the‑Loop (HiL) test benches and lab equipment.

This role involves interpreting detailed electrical schematics and pin maps, assembling connectors and terminations to industry standards. Our technician ensures HiL benches and fixtures are properly wired, labeled, grounded, safe, and test‑ready, and supports troubleshooting of wiring and connectivity issues. Our technicians will keep our test infrastructure reliable, documented, and scalable. Team supports multiple machine product lines and are continually building new benches to support new NPI deliverables.

 

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

Harness fabrication & rework

· Build custom wiring harnesses from drawings, schematics, and pinout tables (breakouts, shielded/twisted pairs, coax/RF as applicable).

· Perform precision crimping, soldering, splicing (e.g., butt splice, solder sleeves), heat‑shrink/boot application, braiding/looming/lacing, strain relief, and cable management.

· Apply labels, heat‑shrink markers, and color codes; maintain consistent routing and bend radius practices.

· Execute continuity, insulation resistance, and (where specified) hipot tests; log and resolve defects.

 

Load plate/build panel assembly

· Assemble load plates / I/O plates / patch panels to interface ECUs/UUTs with HIL benches (e.g., resistor networks, relays, fusing, terminal blocks, fault insertion interfaces, protection/conditioning circuits).

· Mount and wire DIN‑rail components, power distribution, and grounding; verify loads, ratings, and derating; ensure panel labeling and documentation.

 

HIL bench support

· Modify existing harnesses and panels, update pin maps and drawings, and verify changes on‑bench.

· Support benches bring‑up, signal checkout, and debug with engineers (CAN/LIN/Ethernet/analog/digital I/O, power rails, grounds, shielding).

· Maintain HIL bench uptime: tidy cable routing, quick‑turn rework, connector repairs, spare parts inventory.

Documentation & quality

· Read/interpret schematics, wiring diagrams, connector datasheets, and harness drawings; generate/update BOMs, pin maps, and as‑built records.

· Follow 5S and lab safety procedures.

· Track work via word order; record test results and traceability (part/lot numbers, crimp tool calibration, torque values).

 

Lab operations

· Manage consumables and components (wire gauges/types, terminals, contacts, housings, back shells, heat‑shrink, fuses).

· Calibrate or flag equipment (crimp tools, DMMs, labelers, cable testers); coordinate RMA/repairs as needed.

· Ensure 5S cleanliness and work environment.

Requirements

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

High school diploma or GED required with 0-2 years of technical experience, OR 2-yr associates degree in Electronics Technology, Diesel Power Equipment Technology, or a related field.

REQUIRED SKILLS:

· Harnessing/wiring experience - capable of building custom wiring harnesses from drawings, schematics, and pinout documentation (breakouts, shielded/twisted pairs, coax/RF as applicable) with precision crimping, soldering, splicing (e.g., butt splice, solder sleeves), heat‑shrink/boot application, braiding/looming/lacing, strain relief.

· Usage of electronic test equipment to troubleshoot wiring/harness – capable of using a fluke meter to troubleshoot wiring harness

· PC hardware and PC networking experience (expected to help remove PC cards, basic PC management such as ensuring power is on and being able to power cycle the PC when needed by remote staff.

· Basic electrical theory concept

· Mechanical inclination (be able to use basic tools like drills, etc)

· Blue print/schematic reading experience (be able to read wiring diagram)

· Be comfortable with using Microsoft software such as words, excel, etc…

· Proof of attention to details (as one mis-wiring could cause hours of troubleshooting for the team)

· Excellent written and verbal communication skills

· Self-driven and great interpersonal skills as you will be working with a diverse team of engineers
