Description
The History program at Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, invites applications for a U.S. historian with expertise in Latina/o/x history. All subspecialties will receive full consideration. The successful applicant will be expected to teach courses in face-to-face and online formats. Opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration are available with Art History, Philosophy, Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, Latin American and Latina/o/x studies, and the university’s new Center for Virtual Expression (CVeX). This is a tenure-track nine-month appointment with an anticipated start date of August 11, 2026. The position reports to the Director of the School of History and Philosophy. Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience, while also considering internal equity.
Examples of Duties
The regular teaching load is two (2) courses per semester. The successful candidate will teach large-enrollment United States survey classes, upper-level and graduate courses in their area(s) of specialization, and historical methods. The candidate will be expected to deliver most courses in person, but there may be a need for online teaching. Additionally, the successful candidate will pursue a vigorous research program, mentor graduate and undergraduate students, and provide service to the program, school, college, university, and the professional community, nationally or internationally, in accordance with the School of History and Philosophy Operating Papers. Support and positively contribute to SIU’s mission of student success and retention through actions and responsibilities within this role.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
PhD in History or equivalent by the time of appointment.
ABD applicants will be considered if all PhD requirements are completed by August 11, 2026.
